The AMT certification for Patient Care Technicians is called the Registered Phlebotomy Technician (RPT).
Eligibility Requirements
To be eligible for the RPT certification, candidates must have a high school diploma or equivalent, complete a formal phlebotomy training program, and have at least 1,040 hours of work experience as a phlebotomist.
Exam Content
The RPT exam covers the following areas:
Patient Care Techniques: This section covers patient care procedures such as bathing, grooming, dressing, feeding, transferring, and ambulation, as well as providing comfort measures and maintaining patient safety.
Venipuncture Techniques: Candidates are tested on their ability to perform venipuncture, including blood collection, specimen handling, and related safety and infection control procedures.
Specimen Processing and Handling: This area focuses on the proper handling, storage, and transport of specimens, as well as related safety and infection control procedures.
Regulatory Compliance: Candidates are tested on their knowledge of federal and state regulations related to phlebotomy and patient care.
Exam Format
The RPT exam consists of 100 multiple-choice questions, and candidates have 2 hours to complete the test. The exam is administered in a computer-based format at an approved testing center.

The AMT provides study materials to help candidates prepare for the RPT exam, including an exam content outline, study guide, and practice tests. Candidates can also use additional resources such as textbooks, online tutorials, and practice exams from other sources to supplement their preparation.
Exam Fees
The cost to take the RPT exam is $120 for AMT members and $135 for non-members.
Exam Results

RPT Certification Renewal
