Job Description

A Pediatric Dental Assistant is responsible for working with the pediatric dentist to provide specialized care to children, including assisting with behavior management and educating children on proper oral hygiene practices. They also help with patient care, record-keeping, and office management tasks.

Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Preparing the child for dental procedures, such as seating them in the dental chair and getting their medical history.
  2. Assisting the pediatric dentist during dental procedures, such as cleanings and fillings.
  3. Sterilizing dental instruments and equipment to prevent the spread of infection.
  4. Taking dental X-rays and developing them for the dentist to review.
  5. Maintaining accurate patient records, including medical history, treatment plans, and progress notes.
  6. Managing office administrative tasks, such as answering phones, scheduling appointments, and managing patient files.
  7. Educating children and parents on proper oral hygiene practices and providing preventive dental care.
  8. Assisting with behavior management techniques to help children feel comfortable and cooperative during dental procedures.
  9. Ordering and maintaining pediatric dental supplies and equipment inventory.
  10. Maintaining a clean and organized treatment room and work area.
  11. Providing assistance to the pediatric dentist and other members of the dental team as needed.

Skills and Qualifications

  1. High school diploma or equivalent.
  2. Completion of a dental assistant training program that includes pediatric dentistry training.
  3. Knowledge of pediatric dental procedures, instruments, and terminology.
  4. Proficiency in sterilization techniques and infection control procedures.
  5. Good communication and interpersonal skills, especially with children and parents.
  6. Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
  7. Ability to work effectively as part of a team.
  8. Computer skills for managing electronic patient records and scheduling appointments.
  9. Certification in radiography and dental assisting may be required in some states.

Certification and Licensure

Some states may require certification or registration as a dental assistant. The Dental Assisting National Board (DANB) offers certification for dental assistants who have completed an accredited program or have equivalent work experience. Additionally, some states may require licensure or registration with the state dental board.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the job outlook for dental assistants is expected to grow much faster than the average for all occupations. The median annual salary for dental assistants was $41,180 as of May 2020. The salary for pediatric dental assistants may be higher due to the specialized training and responsibilities required.
